RE: When switch on laptop, i get to the sign on screen, type in password and then says welcome as if its
virus / trojan problem probably - note the probably - either the userinit key has been altered in the registry, or the adjacent shell=explorer.exe key has been changed to a viral program impossible to be sure without seeing the machine, submit a request for chargeable help The machine supplier wont be geared up to repair this, nor will they consider a software issue (which slmodt certainly is) to be their responsility under warranty, hence their advice to reload. Most customers dont have much in the way of important data on their machines, so for most reloading to factory specs is not an issue Two points come out of this 1) invest in decent security software (no that does not mean Norton) 2) invest in some kind of backup for those key files, such as an external drive (or even memory sticks if you want something cheap)

The windows registry probably has gone corrupt. The full data can be backed up and then the operating system can be reinstalled. There is also a non-destructive mode of re-installation which will not delete your data but just reinstall windows.

Sandeep - this can be cured without needing to reload/reinstall, but it requires remote registry surgery using BARTPE or VistaPE. Not something for a home user, but definately something an IT pro should be aware of

RE: When switch on laptop, i get to the sign on screen, type in password and then says welcome as if its
the affected key is almost certainly in [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon] and is "Userinit"="C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe," or possibly "Shell"="Explorer.exe" One or the other will have the execitable changed. Its probably the "userinit.exe" key - the other one usually stops the machine BEFORE the login window

err read "executable" for "execitable"!

It can also be a driver, a program trying to startup that can't or a system service.
