RE: windows 7 restore and backup

no its not an "inherent fault" with windows 7.

Its a fault with your laptop, but exactly what we can't tell. Not enough details
But what do you mean by "surveillance ware"? Whats the connection - why do you think that matters?

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

I have never seen a Windows 7 computer with this problem so it certainly is not an inherent fault. I would say you have something seriously wrong with your computer. Viruses sometimes block System Restore as a means of self-preservation so that is one possible cause.

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

from what I have gathered by web searches this appears to be a common problem with windows 7 I have 2 desktop computers neither of which allow me to create a restore point or backup if I click restore to an earlier time it states no restore points have been created even from the original installation both are desktops with asus MB and amd processors with 3gb ddr ram on-board graphics I have run avg ,glary ,bitdefender, malewarebytes, superantispyware, IObit antivirus and antimaleware I have accessed the system and followed microsofts instructios to ensure system restore is functioning all to no avail there are no restore points created even from microsofts updates I also run rubotted every time I try to create a restore point it takes so long it times out if it is not an inherent fault not a virus, maleware or botnet that only leaves third party software , if I cannot find a better solution I will format the hard drive and re-install windows 7, I cannot see how the computer hardware would prevent me creating a system restore point if there was a problem with the MB or HDD there would be posts on the internet highlighting it and on the manufactures websites I have also tried to create restore points on my brothers and fathers computers and had the same result

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

It is perfectly possible to sabotage Backup and System Restore. If you disable the Volume Shadow Copy service that would stop them both. But this is NOT a common problem. If you have two (or is it four?) computers and they both suffer then it looks as if you are repeating the same mistake.

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

in answer to Jon no it is a genuine copy of windows 7 from the first release pre-orderd in answer to Alan after visiting windows website I downloaded the instructions to ensure that the windows shadow copy services and the services that depend upon it where active/enabled on my computer the others I have not touched as they are not mine even after doing so I still could not create a system restore point but I have now downloaded the win 8.1 preview and installed it when the trial period runs out I will format the hard drive and re-install win 7 ( I have created several restore point with win 8 with no problems I will see if I can do the same with win 7 when I re-install it) thank you for your help in this perplexing situation

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

Garry, I still cannot help but think that the common factor that links all these four malfunctioning computers must be you. Perhaps there is some piece of software you run yourself and recommend to your family? Something that you haven't yet installed on your Windows 8.1 system? Perhaps some Windows go-faster or security software that has unfortunate side-effects.

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

Have you checked that System Protection is not turned off? You find it in Control Panel/System/System Protection. It is possible to disable it on each drive separately. Check it is enabled for your System Drive.

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

In Garry's defence I have noticed a few occasions when if you try to access system restore from either the boot menu or within windows, you're told theres no restore point
but if you boot from a windows CD and use the recovery features from there, the restore points appear. Only seen it about ten times - but out of the total number of PCs I've handled that small.
The other peculiarity of Win7 system recovery is that it sometimes tells you it hasn't worked .....when it has!

However I don't think this is Garry's issue

RE: windows 7 restore and backup

I'm not suggesting that Garry's problem never occurs but if four out of the four computers he has access to show the same problem then that has to be more than coincidence.

I frequently run System Restore from 'Repair Mode' and it often reports that it has not succeeded when it has. Same with Vista, AFAIR.
